The invention relates to a gas generator for air bags, comprising at least one ignition assembly (14, 14a). The ignition assembly consists of a solid material charge (16) which can be ignited by an ignition element (20). An inner receptacle (11) is arranged in the gas generator housing (10). The interior of said receptacle forms a storage chamber (12). When the gas generator is triggered by the solid material element (16), a gas pressure is produced and breaks open the inlet (25) of the thin-walled inner receptacle (11) at predetermined breaking points (26). A piston (32) is thus moved in the direction of an inlet (34) of the housing (10). A base section (33) of the piston (32) destroys an outlet closure (35) of the thin-walled inner receptacle (11) to open the outlet (34). This enables gas to flow from the storage chamber (12) through the outlet (34) into a diffuser (22) into an air bag via the openings (23). |
