abstract |
This invention relates generally to the field of light weight heat exchangers useful for operation in excess 950 °F and more particularly to titanium metal based heat exchangers. The light weight titanium based metal heat exchanger can be coated with an aluminum coating that is subsequently converted to a titanium aluminide surface and can operate as a heat exchanger at temperatures up to 1450 °F. A solgel coating can be applied as a wash coat over the titanium or the titanium aluminide surface to inhibit further oxidation and provides additional protection against scratching damage during handling. These oxidation resistant coatings may also be applied to the braze clad titanium. |
