titleOfInvention N-ethylhydroxylamine as a shortstopping agent for free radical polymerization
abstract A new shortstopping agent for use in stopping free radical polymerizations is N-ethylhydroxylamine or salts thereof (EHA). It is as effective as related hydroxylamines, but is much less volatile so that it tends to remain with the polymer rather than being substantially removed when unreacted monomer(s) is stripped off and recovered. EHA is not corrosive to metals used in commercial equipment for emulsion polymerizations and is expected not to make undesirable nitrosamine by-products.
