abstract A process for the production of clavulanic acid and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof by: a) fermentation of a micro-organism which is capable to produce clavulanic acid, b) isolation of clavulanic acid from the fermentation broth, c) purification of clavulanic acid, e.g. via a salt thereof, d) conversion of the purified clavulanic acid of step c), e.g. of a salt thereof into a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of clavulanic acid, wherein the fermentation broth is extracted with a solvent prior to isolation of clavulanic acid.
