A process for preparing a poly(meth)acrylic acid ester by polymerizing a (meth)acrylic acid ester by the use of an organometallic compound (such as (C5Me5)2SmMe(thf)) having at least one polymerization initiating site, characterized in that a compound having a reactive hydrogen atom in the molecule, such as acetophenone or 4-methyl-2-pentanone, is added as the chain transfer agent. This process facilitates molecular weight regulation, enables reduction in the amount of the organometallic compound to be used, and can provide a poly(meth)acrylic acid ester inhibited from discoloration and improved in the resistance to thermal degradation. |
