abstract Benzothiophene compounds of general formula (I), wherein R1 is lower alkoxy; and R2 is halogeno, lower alkyl, or cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl optionally substituted with lower alkyl, hydroxyl, acyloxy or oxo, which are intermediates useful for the synthesis of 2-substituted-3-(4-substituted benzoyl)-6-hydroxybenzo[b]thiophene derivatives having antiestrogenic activity, can be prepared industrially advantageously by subjecting the compounds of general formula (II) to ring-closing reaction. The compounds of general formula (II) are novel ones useful as the intermediate for the process of the present invention.
