Aspergillus fumigatus lectin and methods of using same |
abstract |
A new protein has been found in extracts of mycelial mats of A. fumigatus which acts as a potent hemagglutinin. This protein binds to L-fucose, a component of a major blood group antigen (H-antigen). Thus, this lectin may contribute to the pathogenicity and virulence of A. fumigatus by enhancing attachment of fungal conidia (spores) to mammalian cell membranes, particularly those in the interior of the lungs. Such attachment would permit A. fumigatus to defeat the normal processes by which particulates such as dust, mold spores and the like are expelled from the lungs. This discovery of the fucose-binding lectin from A. fumigatus leads to a number of useful methods with application to the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of the A. fumigatus infections. |
