Control of microorganism growth |
abstract |
An improved sample enrichment procedure which increases the chances of detecting pathogenic organisms, such as Salmonella, involves the addition of a cell-cycle inhibitor, especially a protein Kinase C inhibitor such as sphingosine, to the culture medium in an amount that prolongs the lag phase of microorganism growth for a time (several hours) sufficient to permit repair of target organism cells that may have been injured by previous stressful conditions. The repaired cells can thereafter compete effectively with dominant non-target species that may also be present in the sample. |
