A method for treating of snoring, sleep apnea and other forms of sleep disordered breathing comprises administration to a patient of a therapeutically effective dose of an acetyl choline esterase inhibitor (CEI) over an appropriate period of time, such as a period substantially coinciding with the period of sleep of said patient. A CEI for use in this method is pyridostigmine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. A useful route of administration of CEI is per os, particularly for absorption in the oral cavity. Also described is the manufacture of a medicament for treatment of sleep disordered breathing by use of CEI, the administration of CEI in combination with deep sleep promoting agent, and a pharmaceutical composition containing CEI and a deep sleep promoting agent. |
