abstract The apparatus comprises: a light source (1) for directing light towards a subject; light detection means (10); and an optical system including focussing means (3) for focussing reflected or fluorescent light returning from the subject and optical selecting means (6) through which light from said focussing means (3) is passed so that only light returning from an area at a selected level (d) beneath the surface of the subject is transmitted to the detection means (10). By selecting the level from which measurements are taken, interference from other levels can be reduced. A hand-held device for the measurement of bilirubin is described.
