A method for detecting Alzheimer's disease in a patient, said method comprising the steps of: (i) selecting from a patient, suspected of having Alzheimer's disease, a fluid sample containing secreted amyloid precursor protein; (ii) reacting the fluid sample proteins with a binding substance specific for either the β-amyloid peptide or the amyloid precursor protein or both; and (iii) assaying for the presence of a higher than normal quantity of secreted amyloid precursor protein with an average molecular weight of greater than about 130 kilodaltons, compared to patients negative for Alzheimer's disease. |
