abstract A process is disclosed for producing betaine surfactants with a reduced salt content. Fatty amines and/or fatty acid amidoamines are alkylated in an aqueous-alcoholic dispersion with halogenated carboxylic acids or their alkali salts, thus formed inorganic salts are filtered out, the solvent is removed and the residue is mixed with water to set the desired concentration of active substance.
