This invention relates to a process for producing polyarylene ethers with recurrent units of general formula (I), in which t and q may be whole numbers, 0, 1, 2 or 3; T, Q and Z may be a chemical bond or a group selected from -O-, -S-, -SO2-, S=O, C=O, -N=N-, -RaC=CRb- and -CRcRd-, provided that at least one of the groups T, Q, or Z are -SO¿2?- or C=O and if t and q are 0, Z is-SO2- or C=O; R?a and Rb¿ are a hydrogen atom or a C¿1? to C10; R?c and Rd¿ are a hydrogen atom, a C¿1? to C10 alkyl, C1 to C10 alkoxy or C6 to C18 aryl group, where said groups may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine atoms, together with the C atom to which they are bonded form a C4 to C7 cycloalkyl group, which may be substituted by one or more C1 to C6 alkyl groups; Ar and Ar?1¿ are C¿6? to C18 aryl groups which may be unsubstituted or substituted by C1 to C10 alkyl, C1 to C18 aryl, C1 to C10 alkoxy or halogen; and anhydride end groups of formula (II) (polyarylene ether A) in which polyarylene etherwith recurring units of general formula (I) and hydroxy end groups (polyarylene ether A') are reacted with phthalic acid anhydrides of general formula (III) in which X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, in a solvent in the presence of potassium fluoride. |
