abstract A polycarboxylic acid prepared by the oxidation of a polysaccharide composed of anhydrous glucose units and having a high carboxyl content and a weight-average molecular weight of 2000 or above; or salts thereof. This acid consumes 435 mg or above of alkali in terms of sodium hydroxide for neutralization of 1g of the same and exhibits a high chelating activity against polyvalent cations, thus being suitable for detergent builders. The acid can be prepared by oxidizing a polysaccharide with an oxidizing agent in the presence of a transition metal catalyst.
