Methods and compositions for detecting schizophrenia based on modification of the dopamine D4 receptor by addition of an adenosyl group to methionine #313 via methionine adenosyltransferase are described herein. Individuals with schizophrenia have a deficiency in methionine adenosyltransferase activity and a lower amount of modified dopamine D4 receptor than normal individuals. Methods for screening therapeutic processes, agents and drugs for use in treatment of schizophrenia are also described. |
