abstract This invention relates to an addition reaction between anions of dialkyl phosphites and acid halides to produce 1-hydroxybisphosphonates and substituted hydroxybisphosphonates. It is preferred that this reaction takes place at a low temperature in a base so that rearrangement to dialkyl (dialkoxyphosphinyl)phosphates is minimized.
