titleOfInvention Electrode-carrying catheter and method of making
abstract An electrode-carrying catheter has elongate, flexible tubing (12) defining a proximal end (14), a distal end (16), and an electrically insulative outer tubular layer (20) intermediate the ends, the tubing (12) including a flexible core (42) and a flexible non-conductive core-covering layer (44) of plastic about the core (42). A plurality of electrically conductive electrodes (30) is disposed on the outer tubular layer (20). In order to conduct electrical signals between the proximal end (14) and each of the electrodes (30), a longitudinally-spaced plurality of flexible electrically conductive wires (45) are helically wound around and at least partially into the core-covering layer (44). The wound wires (45) define a removed section (47) beneath a segment of each of the electrodes (30) to enable electrical contact between a respective one of the wound wires (45) and a respective one of the electrodes (30). Each electrode (30) is in the form of an electrically conductive flexible flat ribbon (51) for providing electrical communication with a respective one of the wound wires (45). Each ribbon (51) is electrically and physically joined to a respective one of the wound wires (45), and wrapped about and crimped onto the outer tubular layer (20).
