abstract A particle detection system of the type having an optical particle sensor (37) detecting particles in a liquid stream directed between an inlet (19) and an outlet (55) of the sensor (37). The sensor (37) includes a photodetector producing a signal indicative of the presence and size classes of particles in the stream and a counter (39) receiving the signal to produce a particle count for selected size classes of particles in the liquid. The system includes a source of liquid sample, such as a sample bottle (11) or liquid reservoir (81), in fluid communication with the inlet of the sensor, a source of pressure gas, including a cartridge (21) storing the gas, such as CO2, as a vaporizable liquid under pressure, and means (23-27, 29-31, 17) for directing the pressurized gas to the liquid sample source so as to drive the liquid sample under pressure through the inlet (19) of the sensor (37).
