abstract 2-mercapto-imidazole derivatives substituted in position 4 (or 5) of general formula (I), wherein R1, R2, R5, R6, R7, R8 are hydrogen, lower alkyl, aralkyl or substituted aralkyl; at least R1 or R2 being hydrogen; R3 is -(CH2)nCOR4; -(CH2)nN+(R5R6R7),X-; -CH2CH(COR4)N+-(R5R6R7),X-; R4 is -OR8; -NHR5; -α-amino acid, preferably a natural-α-amino acid; -NHCH2CH2SO3-,Y+; -NHCH¿2?CH2CO2?-,Y+¿; -OCH¿2?CH2N?+(CH¿3)3,X?-; (a), -¿, (b), (c), n = 1 or 2, X- is an anion of an acid acceptable in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical or food industries. Y+ is a cation of a base acceptable in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical or food industries. Said compounds are useful as antioxidizing agents and as active ingredients of a composition having an antioxydizing activity useful in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic or food industries.
