titleOfInvention Optical guide and measurement appliance
abstract This invention is a method and apparatus for visualization of a sagittal section through a transparent optical medium proximate the inferior surface (6) of a lens/mirror assembly (2). Lens compensation means and/or mirror compensation means provide astigmatic correction for images arising along a portion of the sagittal section. For radial keratotomy, illumination of the incision by scleral scatter, anterior chamber retro-illumination, and/or self illumination of a corneal scalpel blade (102) aid in visualization of the scalpel blade within the corneal stroma. Direct visual estimates may be made of blade penetration depth into the stroma, as well as the corneal thickness which is not incised. Other embodiments of the invention facilitate estimation of the depth and degree of relative opacity in optical media resulting from, for example, an incision by a directed energy beam or photo-opacification of tissue.
