abstract This invention relates to the enhancement of memory and cognition and the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome by administration of 3-aryl-4-alkyl and 4,5-dialkyl-4H-1,2,4-triazoles of formula (I) wherein R1 and R2 independently represent hydrogen, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, C1-4 lower alkyl or C1-4 lower alkoxy, or together, R1 and R2 represent -CH=CH-CH=CH-, forming a 1- or 2-naphthylenyl ring system; R3 represents hydrogen or C1-4 lower alkyl; and R4 represents C1-4 lower alkyl, benzyl, or benzyl substituted by one or two groups selected from halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, C1-4 lower alkyl or C1-4 lower alkoxy.
