abstract A polymer composition and a process for producing the same are disclosed, in particular an absorbent material substantially consisting of a special component A based on renewable polysaccharide raw materials, a special component B consisting of a water-swellable polymer, a matrix material, an ionic and/or covalent cross-linking agent or an antiblocking agent. In order to produce said composition, the water-swellable polymer is mixed with the polysaccharide polymer, they are then dried and ground, the other components are added until an homogeneous mixture is obtained, the mixture is thermally treated and when a cross-linking agent is added, it may be fixed in the matrix after the thermal treatment by an additional thermal treatment process. Also disclosed is the use of said polymer composition, as well as hygiene articles (for animals) and technical chemicals containing said polymer composition.
