abstract A process for the preparation of carboxylic acids and esters thereof, comprises the operation of mixing an unsaturated fatty acid or corresponding ester with an oxidative substance, in the presence of a catalyst belonging to the group consisting of oxides of tungsten and molybdenum and their acids and alkaline salts, obtaining an intermediate reaction product, and directly reacting said intermediate product without subjecting it to purification techniques, with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a cobalt containing compound which acts as catalyst.
