4-Hydroxy-δ-lactones are useful intermediates in the preparation of inhibitors of the enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) that is rate-limiting in cholesterol biosynthesis. They are prepared from synthons of the formula (A) wherein either Y is H and -^_-^_-^_ is a double bond or epoxide, or Y is optionally-blocked OH (above the ring, opposite to Z) and -^_-^_-^_ is a single bond; and Z is an organic group. |
