titleOfInvention Process of converting starch to glucose and glucose to lactic acid
abstract A method of converting starch containing industrial waste streams to glucose and then to lactic acid is disclosed. For potato waste, an effective amount of alpha-amylase is added to the starch containing material to gelatanizing and liquify the material. The mixture is maintained at a pH in the range of from about 4 to about 7 while the temperature is elevated to a range from about 90 °C to about 130 °C for not less than 15 minutes. Thereafter the temperature of the material is lowered to about 50 °C to about 70 °C and the pH to below about 6.5. Glucoamylase is then added to convert more than 90 % of the starch to glucose substantially free of microbial activity. The glucose containing hydrolysate is then converted to lactic acid by fermentation.
