titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for recovery of sulfur and/or nitrogen oxides from gases containing such oxides |
abstract | The present invention concerns a method for the recovery of sulfur and/or nitrogen oxides from acid gases such as flue gas. According to the method, the gas is scrubbed in a reaction space with an aqueous solution in which the chief solute is potassium sulfite. The reaction between the scrubbed gases and the scrubbing liquid forms potassium bisulfite that by thermal treatment is decomposed partially to potassium sulfite. At least a portion of the potassium sulfite and bisulfite is bled off and treated in order to produce crystalline sulfur compounds and sulfur dioxide, after which said compounds are recovered and, when necessary, subjected to further processing. The unbled portion of the potassium sulfite and bisulfite is recycled after a possible posttreatment back to the reaction space for use as the scrubbing liquid. According to the invention, the potassium bisulfite containing liquid drained from the reaction space is decomposed by direct steam heating, at least a portion of the sulfur dioxide obtained from the treatment of the potassium sulfite and bisulfite is used for the production of a potassium hydroxyacetosulfonate solution, and the recirculation of the scrubbing liquid is replenished with a fresh feed of potassium sulfite to compensate for the quantity of potassium sulfite and bisulfite bled off from the recirculation system. |
