Apparatus and method for hydrolysis of cyanide-containing liquids |
abstract |
The invention provides an apparatus and process for continuous thermal hydrolysis of cyanide ions and cyanide-containing ions contained in a liquid. The liquid is passed through a reactor (12) equipped with a heater (28) and the liquid is reacted at a preselected temperature in the reactor (usually 150 to 250 C). However, to minimize scale formation, which is a major problem, the liquid is partially heated prior to its introduction into the reactor (12) by means (16), such as steam injection through a venturi mixer, which avoid sharp temperature gradients but nevertheless produces rapid (preferably instantaneous) heating. The heating carried out in the reactor can then be reduced, preferably to less than 1.55 watts/cm?2 of reactor wall, in order to minimize scale formation. The reactor (12) is also preferably orientated vertically to make scale build-up difficult and is of a narrow elongated shape to ensure that all of the liquid flows rapidly through the reactor while providing a suitable retention time for complete hydrolysis. The liquid may then pass to a settling tank (36) for removal of scale and solid particles. |
