Disclosed is a process for the production of compounds labeled with stable isotopes of carbon. Such compounds are useful in diagnostic breath tests. The process involves the cultivation of microorganisms capable of producing such compounds in appropriately controlled environments such as bioreactors, feeding such microorganisms labeled carbon substrates, inducing the microorganisms to produce the labeled compounds and recovering the compounds therefrom. Also, encompassed by the present invention are perlabeled compounds useful in diagnostic breath tests. |
