titleOfInvention High temperature furnace
abstract A furnace configuration is disclosed which is suitable for scale-up of heat transfer limited processes performed at high temperatures, e.g. carbothermic reduction of transition metal or rare earth oxides. The furnace is inductively heated by external insulated coils (3) and the susceptor (2), preferably graphite rings, is placed within the charge (1) away from the outer surfaces of the charge (1). Consequently heat is transferred to the charge (1) in three dimensions and the process approaches completion before the insulation (4) is subjected to high temperatures. As a result of this three dimensional heat transfer, larger furnaces are possible within the heat transfer constraints of these high temperature processes and higher yields are obtained.
