abstract | There is disclosed a method for the treatment of a mammal afflicted with an opportunistic infection, which comprises administering to said mammal a therapeutically effective amount of a compound having formula (I) wherein X is CH2, O, S, or NR (R is H or alkyl), and Ar is a lipophilic aromatic group, in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, the amount being sufficient to substantially inhibit DHFR from the infectious organisms causing the opportunistic infection, but being insufficient to substantially inhibit mammalian DHFR. |
