abstract | The description relates to a process for manufacturing lower alkane sulphonic acids from their alkaline salts by reacting them with HCl and separating the reaction mixture. In the novel process, to obtain an alkane sulphonic acid virtually free from chloride ions, its alkaline salts, mixed with alkaline chloride, if desired, in the form of a concentrated aqueous salt sludge are converted with a multi-molar excess of HCl, related to the alkane sulphonic acid, the solid phase now existing is separated out, the excess HCl together, if desired, with part of the water is extracted from the isolated liquid phase by distillation and the virtually chloride-free alkane sulphonic acid is obtained together with the residual water as the basic phase of distillation. |
