titleOfInvention Methods and apparatus for cryogenic removal of solid materials
abstract A method and apparatus for cryogenic removal of solid materials includes a wand (12) connected in fluid communication with a cryogen fluid source (14). The wand (12) directs the cryogen against a selected portion of solid material (22). The wand (12) has a spray nozzle (32) to direct the spray against an inner exposed surface (23) of energetic material typically contained within a munition casing (20). The wand (12) is connected to a mouting element (16) to allow movement of the wand (12) within the munition casing (20). The munition casing (20) is mounted on a rotatable base (24) for rotating the munition casing (20) and to expose the material (22) to the cryogenic fluid spray (40). The cryogenic fluid spray (40), such as liquid nitrogen, is utilized in a dry washout process to freeze and embrittle the surface layer (23) either by precooling and fluid spray (40), or by spray (40) alone.
