titleOfInvention | Photoneutron method of detection of explosives in luggage |
abstract | A method and apparatus are provided for scanning an object (12) for an element of interest and determining the concentration of the element of interest within the object (12). The apparatus includes a housing (10) for receiving the object (12) to be scanned. An accelerator (14) is incorporated within the housing (10) for producing a pulsed bremsstrahlung beam of high-energy photons. The photons are utilized to activate the nucleus of the element to be detected. The nucleus absorbs a photon and, subsequently, emits a photoneutron which is detected; and an output signal, representative of the flux density and energy of the photoneutrons, is processed and analyzed to determine the concentration of the element of interest within the object (12). |
