Reinforcing and/or process fibres based on vegetable fibres are obtained by treating vegetable fibres exempts from ligneous constituents with an aqueous solution of at least one metallic compound, chosen from the metallic oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, sulphates, thiosulphates, sulphites, silicates or phosphates. The fibres are then washed and treated with an inorganic or organic binder or the unwashed fibres are neutralized with a mineral acid. Alternatively, vegetable fibres exempt from ligneous constituents are treated with an oxidizing agent, or non-pretreated vegetable fibres are carbonized by treating them at 250 to 350°C with a controlled supply of air. |
