abstract A gas discharge apparatus (10) includes a discharge chamber (12) including a transparent dome portion (18) and an electrode (22) including base portion (16), which together enclose an ionizable gas. A cup-shaped base member (30) is affixed at its periphery to the edge of the base portion (16) of the discharge region (20). A power supply and discharge excitation network (14) include a pair of terminals (34a, 34b) is disposed within the interior of the base member (30). An oscillator (40) and associated step-up output transformer (42) powered from the terminals (34a, 34b) is positioned between the terminals (34a, 34b) and the discharge region (20). A field shield (50) including a conductive sheet member (52) is positioned between the terminals (34a, 34b) and the discharge region (20). The field shield (50) is adapted to be electrically coupled to the electrode (22) so that discharge-supporting electric fields may be established in the discharge region (20) between the electrode (22) and the effective ground electrode exterior to the discharge chamber (12).
