abstract The invention relates to a method for preparing particles of gel-forming polysaccharides which can be used as gel matrices for separating different biomolecules, such as proteins or nucleic acids. The gel particles are prepared by dissolving the polysaccharide in water at a temperature above its dissolving temperature, and emulsifying the solution in an organic solvent to form a water-in-oil emulsion, whereupon the emulsion is cooled such that the polysaccharide solidifies and is separated from the solvent. To obtain particles having a very narrow particle size distribution, the emulsification is carried out according to the invention in the presence of an inorganic hydrophobic protective colloid.
