abstract The invention relates to the field of production of refractory inorganic compositions in particular to methods of obtaining silicon nitride with a high alpha-phase content. The method of obtaining silicon nitride with a high alpha-phase content is effected by means of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The method comprises contacting a mix containing silicon reagent and an addition, with a nitriding medium. The silicon reagent used is metal silicon, and the addition used is at least one of the ammonium halides in a quantity of 1-60 % of the weight of the silicon reagent. The synthesis is carried out at a pressure of 4-30 Mpa.
