abstract Peptide compositions comprising a sequence of CD4 including the cysteine at position 86 are provided where the sulfur of the cysteine is substituted with an aryl-containing substituent or a thioether resulting from the reaction between the thio group of the cysteine and a maleimide or a disulfide resulting from reactions between the thio group of the cysteine and other thio-containing compounds. The resulting compositions may be used prophylactically or therapeutically for inhibiting interactions between CD4 and retroviral proteins.
