A colourless transparent polymer material, preferably suitable for optical applications, is produced by radical mass polymerization of a monomer mixture. The monomer mixture contains (a) at least 20 to 40 wt. % of a zirconium (IV) acrylic compound, b) at least 20 to 50 wt. % of a polymerizable aromatic compound, c) at least 20 to 40 wt. % of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic ester of methacrylic acid, d) at least one bifunctional (crosslinkable) component from b) or c). With the exception of a), the molar ratio of the aromatic to the aliphatic functionalities in the components is from 2 to 1.4, the napthyl residue being weighted by a factor of 1.3 to 1.5 with respect to the phenyl residue. The polymer material has a refractive index nD? 1.55 and an Abbe coefficient vD? 35; preferably zirconium (IV) methacrylate is used as component a) and styrol as component b). |
