abstract | An axial seal for rotary combustor having a rotatable cylindrical drum (22) includes axial seal strips (84) extending from the outer periphery of the drum (22), and sealing structures (90) for forming passages for providing combustion fluids along portions of the rotatable cylindrical drum (22). Each sealing structure (90) includes a movable shoe (112) positioned along the periphery of a portion of the rotatable cylindrical drum (22), a support (92) positioned at a predetermined distance from the axial seal strips (84) along a portion of the periphery of the rotatable cylindrical drum (22), and a plurality of spring units (94, 96) coupled between the support (92) and the movable shoe (112). The spring units (94, 96) urge the movable shoe (112) into contact with at least one of the axial seal strips (84). As a result, an air seal is continuously provided between the axial seal strips (84) and the movable shoe (112) even though the rotary combustor expands and contracts with temperature. |
