A polymer has a betaine structure on at least one lateral chain, and is suitable as a material for manufacturing a pervaporation membrane. Also described is a process for manufacturing said polymer, in which betaine groups are introduced in an initial polymer. This is performed by irradiating the initial polymer with ionizing radiation and treating the latter with monomers able to effect a graft reaction. Use is made of monomers which either already contain a betaine function or are capable of forming one. The betaine formation can, for example, be effected by alkylizing quaternization of a neutrogen atom contained in the monomer if an acid group is simultaneously introduced with the alkylizing medium. |
