Method for the preparation of a lactone colour former by reacting a substituted ethylene with a cyclic aromatic carboxylic anhydride or an intermediate keto acid derived from prior reaction between the anhydride and an aromatic compound, in the presence of a dehydrating agent, wherein following the reaction the solid reaction product formed is separated and washed in an alkaline polar organic solvent with removal of acid or potentially acid materials and of coloured by-products where present. |
