A process for producing an aqueous suspension of nitrifying bacteria, in which the bacteria remain metabolically and physiologically active by induction of the enzymatic systems specific for the nitrification, can be kept for long periods and can be finally used. By creating separate compartments having a higher or lower oxygen partial pressure in the same medium, the bacteria multiply in the aerobic zones, forming a strain-specific biofilm and further multiply, by nitrite reduction for example, in the anaerobic zones. The damaging effects of oxygen are excluded. |
