titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for packaging an intraocular lens
abstract A retainer (10) for retaining an intraocular lens (20) in a sterile liquid in a vial (12) includes an elongated pair of side walls (25, 26) defining a lens-receiving area therebetween. A transversely-extending wall (44) between the side walls (25, 26) defines a support surface for the edges of the haptic (22) of the lens (20). Ribs (56, 57, 58, 59) on the interior surfaces of the side walls (25, 26) terminate short of the transversely-extending wall (44) to define slots (35) for retaining the haptic (22) of the lens (20). An access opening (72) is defined by the transversely-extending wall (44) to permit the retained lens (20) to be freed for removal by an instrument from without the confines of the retainer (10). The retainer (10) terminates in its upper portion in a pair of protruding tabs (40, 42) defining slots (46, 48) for receiving an instrument for removing the retainer and the lens from the vial. The method of inserting and removing the lens from the retainer is also described.
