abstract A water retentive composition comprising granules of a water retentive polymer coated with particles of diatomaceous earth. The polymer is preferably a crosslinked acrylamide copolymer having granules of a size not exceeding 75 microns. Also disclosed is a method of treating granules of a water retentive polymer so as to reduce the tendency of such granules to coalesce when in contact with water and other aqueous solutions. The method comprising the step of contacting the granules with diatomaceous earth so as to provide a coating of diatomaceous earth on the granules.
