titleOfInvention A winch for marine application, in particular a davit winch, a davit winch provided with a swell-compensator
abstract A winch for marine application, in particular a davit winch of the type provided with a swell-compensator. The winch is destined to control cable-drums (1) for hoisting loads, lifeboats, capsules and the like. These loads can be discharged from a drilling platform onto a supply-vessel or hoisted thereof. Lifeboats can be launched in a choppy sea or hoisted therefrom with a full load of persons. According to the invention, at least one of the planetary-gearing transmission arrangements (8) is provided with a gearwheel (85) affixed to the outer or crownwheel (83) and engaging with a pinion-gear (10). This pinion-gear can be controlled either by a separate braking-arrangement (15, 16) (Fig. 1) or by a main-motor (M) (Fig. 2). In the latter case, the operation of the hydraulic auxiliary-motor (M) is derived from the main-motor (M) the former of which motors functions as a swell-compensator under the influence of a hydraulic-regulator. In both cases and either manually or automatically under full load, the winch can either hoist-in or pay-out a load or hoist-in or launch a lifeboat whilst at the same time functioning to compensate for rise and fall movements caused by the swell and without the imposition of impact or shock loads to the cables and winch operating system.
