titleOfInvention | Electrode for arc welding, electrode coating, and method for underwater welding |
abstract | In underwater welding, adequate protection of the weld zone is required to ensure the proper strength and ductility of the weld. An arc welding electrode comprises a base rod (6) having a hard coating (8) except for arc tip (2) and electrode holder end (4). Powder coatings (12), (16), and (20) comprising thermite, a gelling agent, and optional particles of a hard coating material swell upon contact with water and form a gelatinous coating, as well as acting as an insulating and fluxing agent. Successive layers of adhesive (10), (14), and (18) and powder coatings (12), (16), and (20) are applied to the electrode to achieve the desired coating thickness. To protect the powder coatings (12), (16), and (20) from humidity before use, an air-tight wrapping (22) is supplied. |
