abstract Method for measuring the number or methane-producing activity of a methane bacteria-containing sample, which comprises irradiating the sample with exciting light of a specific wave-length region to measure the intensity of fluorescent light of a specific wavelength emitted by the sample. Since the intensity of fluorescent light intrinsic to the methane bacteria is measured, the number or methane-producing activity of methane bacteria included in a number of microorganisms and present in digested sludge in a methane fermentation tank of a sewage treatment system can be measured with good accuracy.
