abstract Aqueous suspensions of starch, particularly for use in the paper and board industry, are stabilised by addition of a minor amount of a hydrophilic polymeric viscosity-increasing agent such as xanthan gum. The suspensions may also comprise a major amount of an anionic polysaccharide or polyacrylate. Viscous treating agents of this type can be applied to paper or board during manufacture, by using a spinning surface atomiser, especially a spinning cone atomiser.
