abstract The compounds having the formula (I), wherein R is: -H, -CH2CN, -CH2CH2 -N(CH2CN)2, -CH2CH2-N(CH2CN)-CH2CH2-N(CH2CN)2 or -CH2CH2-NH-CH2CH2-NH-N(CH2CN)2 are prepared by reacting ammonia ethylenediamine or diethylenetriamine with the formaldehyde and the cyanhydric acid. The process is characterized in that, as catalyst, aminoacetic acid is used which is also used for the preparation of acetonitrile of formula I. Aminoacetic acid has the formula (II), wherein R' is: -H, -CH2COOH, -CH2CH2N(CH2COOH)2, -CH2CH2-N(CH2COOH)-CH2CH2-N(CH2COOH)2 or -CH2CH2-NH-CH2CH2-N(CH2COOH)2.
